The following are the sections available in the Library:

  • Readers’ Services’ Section
  • Reference Section
  • Serials Section
  • E-Library Section
  • Acquisitions Section
  • Cataloguing Section
  • Petrographic Section

Readers’ Services’ Section

This section consists of the Circulation Unit and Reserved Unit. The section is in charge of circulation of Library materials. It is the image maker of the Library. It oversees the general reading area as well as the Open Access Collection. This Unit deals directly with the Library patrons. Registration of Users, charging and discharging of books and other materials are carried out at this Unit. The Readers’ Services’ Librarian, Library Officers and Library Assistants at this Unit are always around to assist with the various activities in this section.

Reserved Book Unit

This is a Unit under the Readers’ Services section of the Library. Books placed in this Unit are not in multiple copies but are always requested for by many Library users. Most of the books placed here are at the discretion of lecturers referring their students to the books from time to time. Books placed in this Unit are therefore consulted on hourly basis in order to go round all the Users. Reserved books cannot be borrowed.

Reference Section

The reference section provides reference services to staff, students and researchers. The reference section is headed by a Reference Librarian whose duty is to assist readers in getting information from the Library resources for study, research and teaching. This section renders the following services:

  • Provides answers to specific enquiries
  • Instructs readers on the use of the library and the catalogues, abstracts, indexes and local and Foreign University calendars.
  • Guides users in locating materials
  • Conducts an extensive literature search for library users with research of project proposals
  • Provides inter-Library Services by issuing Letters of Introduction to registered members of the library to use other libraries when required materials are not available in this library.

Serials Section

The Serials section contains current and back issues of both foreign and local journals, magazines, newspapers, special collections such as Government publications, Inaugural Lecture Series, Rare books and other significant collections. To consult any serial collections, the reader must first consult the Serials Librarian who will check the Kardex to know if the information requested are available. Newspapers can also be read in this section of the library. After the materials had been received the readers are expected to register their name on the Serials Register indicating the type of materials to be consulted e.g. journal, or any other document. The users are expected to submit their library identification cards when consulting serial materials. After use, the users will sign off and retrieve their library ticket before leaving the section.

E-Library

The E-Library section of the library is located at the first floor of the library. Here library users have access to a wide variety of electronic resources (online repositories, online databases, e-journal sites e.tc.) where they can get information for their academic research. The facility has about 100 computers, 25 of which are reserved for lecturers. With the e- Library, library users have biggest advantage of doing online research with immediate accessibility to information and access to huge databases in various fields. Online research also gives the researcher the advantage of being able to follow a hunch and look up information on the fly.

Acquisition Section

The Acquisition section is in charge of Library Stock development. It seeks and enjoys the cooperation of Academic staff as well as students in its crucial task of stock building. Recommended titles for acquisition are usually forwarded to the Acquisition Librarian with approval from the University Librarian.

Cataloguing Section

The Cataloguing section takes care of getting the library materials ready for use of the library patrons by processing, cataloguing and classifying the materials. This section is “OUT OF BOUND” to non-library staff.
